Q: What type of songs can we expect from your solo album? "A slow tempo song, a genre of song that I’ve tried for the first time. 99% of my taste in music will be reflected in this album. In a typical album production, the title song is produced first, followed by matching songs, then the choreography to match the songs and finally the album jacket concept, but it was the opposite for me. The choreography and album jacket concept was produced first. I’ll decide the kind of expression and image I want to paint for the audience with the choreography and do the photoshoot for the album jacket to match that. Once those are complete, then I can begin to decide what kind of songs will match the mood. Instead of thinking what kind of songs will give off the “this song is good” feeling, I prefer to imagine, “what kind of song will fit the mood and atmosphere of my performance very well.” That’s when I decided to work with Ryan Jhun, August Rigo and BEAST’s Yong Junhyung Q: What kind of choreography can we expect? I wanted to show a mature image of myself. I was too caught up with a “my new side” kind of concept for my first solo album, mainly because I wanted to show an image that I didn’t get to show when I was doing group activities, but the feedback I received was that I didn’t exude enough confidence, so I thought to myself, maybe I was too greedy. So this time, I adopted a mindset, “what is the kind of performance can I do best?” Q: So have you come to a conclusion? What is the performance that is the most like you? It’s important to have a perfect performance with good vocals but I realised that it's even more important that I’m able to express the music well. You'll seew when the album is released; it’s still a secret right now! Q: Did you personally pick the producer, song composer, photographer, etc? Yes, I did receive a lot of help from Brave Brothers for my first album, though. Not just the music but the music video, fashion, hair and make up were also proposed by me. I’ve learned a lot from the album production process. I’ve also learned how I can create the kind music and performance I want. I wanted to have more say in my second solo album. Q: We're curious about the fashion, hair and make up concept. It’s a concept that you can see and say is "Hyomin." Q: Your toned body is a hot topic. How much effort do you need to put in to maintain your sexy thigh muscles and slim waist? I personally think that women should have some volume on their thighs to be sexy. But a toned thigh with volume because the exercise for it is very different due to putting on weight. I usually do intensive lower body workouts at the fitness centre. A kind of strength training for legs and thighs. Whereas for a slim and slender waist, it’s more of dieting than working out. Q: Do you usually control your diet? Of course, but it’s really not easy to have a diet regime for an entire month. That’s why I don’t go on a strict diet for more than 2 weeks. If there’s an important schedule, I only go on short-term strict diet regimes. I can’t go on a long-term regimes because I love to drink with my friends, eat snacks and a lot of delicious food. Q: How do you switch to a short-term strict diet regime? I stop junk food and stick strictly to healthy food. I stop eating rice and pack lunch boxes with sweet potatoes, corn, eggs and fruits. I only eat the amount that I want whenever I’m hungry. There are times when I worry and think, “I won't put on weight if I eat this much, right?” Nevertheless, my complexion becomes better whenever I follow this kind of diet because it has a kind of detoxing effect. It’s good for bowel movements too, haha. I'd really feel like my body is becoming healthier. I only eat half a bowl of rice even when I'm really very hungry and have vegetables with salt as side dishes. Q: Your comeback soon, so have you been on a diet recently? I’m kind of used to a dieting and a healthy lifestyle recently. I only eat delicious food occasionally and eat more healthy food. I walk around my house for 30 minutes. So I'm usually wearing running shoes and I do a lot of stretching whenever I can. Q: Have you imagined a 30-year-old Hyomin before? What kind of image do you want to have? An image of a reliable woman who is able to do anything that she’s entrusted to! I want to be someone who can do everything well. I feel that whether you’re a woman or man, you have to hold a professional image. I hope that I’ll become a professional 30-year-old person. Q: Other than being a singer, what other fields of profession do you want to explore? Photography and video production. I really have a lot of interest in production. If there’s a chance, I want to try directing a photoshoot of a junior. Q: Will we be able to see Hyomin appear on TV for the first half of this year? Yes, I’ll appear on TV when my second solo album is released in March. I want to say, please look forward to it and I’ll do my best. T-ara's Eunjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon will be visiting Vietnam after 2 years. On the 25th, MBK revealed that the trio will be departing for Vietnam on the 12th of March in order to greet Vietnam fans and hold a special 3-day V Live broadcast. 2 years ago, 2000 fans had crowded the airport to greet the Korean girl group, showcasing their immense popularity. Eunjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon say they are excited to meet their Vietnam fans once again. Additionally, the 3 T-ara members will as well be attending a mobile phone launch event on the 15th. After a 5 year break (T/N: excluding her Netflix drama), actress Jiyeon has returned. 'I Wanna Hear Your Song' is a mystery rom-com about a timpanist, played by Kim Sejeong, who lost her memory on the day of a murder and is searching for the truth with the help of a strange man. Jiyeon plays the role of the outspoken violinist, Ha Eunjoo. The last time Park Jiyeon came out as a solo artist was while T-ara was active. And the time she felt afraid, she fell into a slump. However, those times helped her become who she is today. "I've become more greedy. I feel happy now. I want to share it with the people beside me and have fun with many people." Zenith News met with Park Jiyeon at a cafe in Nonhyeon-dong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul. After her work as an actress, Jiyeon revealed her plan to expand as a solo singer and other new activities. Q. It's been a while since we saw you on the small screen. You chose to return with 'I Wanna Hear Your Song'. It's an unusual choice. It's been a long time since I've done this. Regardless of the results, I met good people and was happy to be a part of it, I was happy. I think it will be a memorable project. Q. The drama combines various genres such as romance, comedy, mystery and thriller. It has mystery, rom-com, and music. In fact it's a difficult genre. I really wanted to challenge Ha Eunjoo's character of an attractive violinist. Q. Can you play any musical instruments? I can't play any instrument. Haha. I don't have such talents. Filming started in April and we filmed for 5 months. I practiced the violin for over a month. I played the violin for the first time. It was very difficult. I got a bruise on my chin. In fact, people who play the violin have traces on their jaw and collarbone. Q. What about Ha Eunjoo attracted you? I felt she was a cool, vengeful character who was outspoken with her words and actions. Especially when she hides her pain but expresses herself in front of loved ones, it was really touching. That day (in the drama) Eunjoo was put down all day, she couldn't even get in touch with the person she liked because he was with another woman. It was a one sided romance. It's a scene where a woman in love was really hurt. Q. Do you have any regrets about the romance? Eunjoo and Juwan's (Song Jaerim) relationship is very ambiguous. So there is a lot to be desired in their romance. As the mystery developed, Eunjoo didn't have a lot of parts. The writer held my hand and told me "I'm very sorry", but I don't think I was disappointed. In the long run it's just too bad because my heart wants to remember a lot of precious memories. Q. Is there something about Eunjoo you care to express? The writers and director said they wanted to be sure there was a contrast about the character. So that it could be easy to understand the character, I rehearsed with the other actors so that we were in sync. It's been a long time since I've worked, at the meeting before filming began, I told them "it's been a long time for me, there's a lot I don't know so I hope you'll help me". A lot of the staff really helped me. Everyone felt comfortable, and we had fun filming. Q. You returned to the small screen after a long time. Did the members of T-ara support you? We give each other feedback like "I enjoyed watching you. You worked hard." Haha. We're really like family. Between us, I'm the most straightforward. Without speaking, I can coolly tell all your feelings and worries. Q. I'm sure there was big expectation and reactions from fans. It's been 5 years since I've worked, my heart is sorry and I'm also very thankful. I couldn't read comments like feedback while I was working, but I didn't want to read or see as much as possible. I don't think I can get use to malicious comments. No matter how much hurt and pain I've endured, because when it hurts, it hurts. So I regained confidence and strength from the fans' reactions. They're very precious to me. And my parents liked it too. It's been a while since I've worked and I'm happy they enjoyed watching. For me, my fans and parents are very similar. They've been supporting, watching, and waiting for me with the same heart. I'm very thankful. Q. It's been a long time since you were out on the scene, has anything changed? Working hours. In the past, you would film overnight without sleep for months, now the atmosphere is better because of the law. If you can't sleep, continuous filming makes you sensitive. It's a good change that considers the safety of the staff and condition of the filming sites. There's a part in the drama where we filmed a murder case that could've been dangerous, it was done without any accidents. We talked about our good fortune at the finale party. Q. What was the filming site atmosphere like? We finished really well. There were many staff members I met 10 years ago. I met a lot of people from my other works like 'Master of Study'. They remember me playing "seobang, seobang". They were surprised to see me play the role of the outspoken Ha Eunjoo who hits people. It felt strange. Haha. When I didn't know any better, I could do it without fear, ignorance is bliss as they say, after I learned, I became more concerned. It was a place where I was very thankful for all the help. Q. It took a long time for you to return after T-ara's activities. Is there a reason? I think everyone goes through a slump. I had no motivation at the time. Why should I eat this, I was so exhausted I didn't know why I had to go out and meet people. I had no confidence, I couldn't do anything. I spent most of my time with my parents. And then I met my current company, we would often eat rice together. When things became hard, they helped me a lot. It was my company and work that pulled me out of it, they gave me confidence. I'm sincerely very thankful. I know the feeling again of meeting people face to face and working in the field. That made me so happy. Now I have the heart to "get started again". I want to greet everyone with a firm, steady and good image. Q. You referred to your hiatus as a slump. Was it the first time you went through that? It's not the first time. Like there are sad and gloomy days, this void felt the biggest. It was very dark. It was the time the T-ara members scattered and stood alone. I think it was the most frightening time ever. But I did not collapse thanks to my fans, I think I can see things with a wider perspective now. Q. The T-ara members are singers, you are making your way as an actress. Why did you make your first steps as an actress instead of a singer? There's no reason. I focused on showing myself as an actress first. I wanted to learn professionally. I received good care from my company. The people in my company are really good people. I could trust them because they wanted to see me happy. I became even more confident. Q. Do you plan to return to the stage as a singer? I've been preparing for an album for a long time. There was a communication issue with my Chinese company. I also stopped for a while in order to focus on the drama. Now that the drama is over, I plan to make a comeback by the end of November. I want to show fans a more cool Jiyeon on stage after a long time. Q. Any new works or character greed? Until this drama, it was always a one-sided romance in school. There were a lot of villains. But this is the first villain I played as an adult, I think that has a different charm. It suits me. Sometimes people ask me in surprise, "why do you seem so scary?" Haha. Next time, I want to try a lively rom-com. An upbeat role would suit my age right now. I want to try a calm story of people living in their 20s. I think I'm really greedy. Till now I've been a bad guy, I want to win a righteous friendly role, I want to do action well. I think there will be many opportunities. Before, I would be anxious and nervous, now my mind has grown broader. My thoughts have deepened. Q. Has your greed for activities grown? It's been a long time since I worked, I kept pushing myself. I wasn't satisfied with any activity. It didn't make sense to have an activity I was satisfied with, it was like I was too complacent. But I feel happy now, and I want to share it with the people beside me and have fun with many people. Q. Are there any regrets about your group activities? Recently Fin.KL reunited as a whole on JTBC's Camping Club. As someone who has been active in girl group for 10 years, it looks perfect. We're senior idols. In fact, we're in the process of uniting. We're progressing slowly so we can build our careers, I'd like it if we could do it at least once someday. I wish all the girl groups that are our friends could be active. Q. What are your plans for other entertainment programs? I want to do entertainment programs. But I think entertainment is the hardest. I want to challenge it, but for now I want to focus on my album. Can't I try it after it's done? Haha. Q. Your fans are a big presence to you. What does that mean? I'm here because of my fans. Really. My most precious beings. They're a big source of strength. Like a friend, sister or brother. I'm always sorry and grateful to them. I want to repay them with a loved image. I continue to be empowered because of our relationship. Q. Are there any plans for a fan meeting? Like a fan meeting, I think the closer we meet the better. My fans become happy and so do I. It's been a long time since I've been with my fans. It's an affectionate relationship. We've been through so much that we've become this close. They're a precious presence I learn a lot from and who always make me stronger. Q. What are your plans and goals for the future? I don't want anything more than what I have now. I think I am my happiest right now. It’s a really different style compared to the music I’ve showed up till now. The album is full with the music genres I like, it’s based off the pop genre but also has some electronic elements, it’s hard to describe the album with just one genre. I’ll let you listen to it later. We’re honored! We heard that outstanding people participated in your album such as Ryan Jhun who produced for EXO, SHINEE, Red Velvet, DQ who composed Beyonce’s ‘Hello’, August Rigo who produced Justin Bieber’s ‘U Smile’, Chris Brown’s “Back To Sleep’, and One Direction’s ‘Gotta Be You’. It’s been an honour to work together with such solid people. Most of them live overseas so I met personally with only two of them. After the album finished, they praised me saying I sang well which made me feel proud. We heard that you locked yourself inside the recording studio for few months. Yes, at first. I’ve been in charge of everything including the chorus this time. I think I stayed in there for almost 50~60 hours every time. When recording as a group in T-ARA, not only our parts are short but we’re also always pressed for time due to our schedule. But for this time, I stayed in there for long hours and recorded over and over until I liked the outcome, I also shared lots of talks with the producers while recording, it took a long time but was fun and remained as a good memory. We’re curious, was there any special reason for you to devote yourself this much? This might sound a little funny, but I wanted to show that I’m a person with lots of passion and greed in singing. That’s why I also practiced a lot. Of course, the performer side to me is also important, but through this album I wanted to show the vocalist side to me too. Ah right, the album contains two self-composed songs. I think you can look forward to it. We heard than you not only composed the songs but also participated in the visual directing of the album. Looking at your instagram, you seem to have lots of interest in art. I’ve always liked looking at and making visual things. It’s probably because my parents major in art, but I grew up playing with art tools since I was young, so it influenced me. For this album, I personally picked the concept while picturing the kind of performance I wanted to do. While looking up the internet, I analysed the image people have of me and then sketched the image that people want to see me doing the most. I hired the photographer, MV director, and stylist who usually know my preferences the best and vice versa, then we held a meeting to discuss our ideas, after that we went ahead with filming the album jacket first. Actually before finishing the title track ‘Sketch’, I first made a visual map and then worked on it inversely. A process in which you first create the visuals and then create the song inversely, what a fresh idea! Our company thought it was absurd that I filmed the album jacket even before making the songs, but it resulted in an album that matches with the image I had in mind so everyone was satisfied eventually. That’s very smart. If I had to do it because someone told me to do it, I wouldn’t have done it like this. (laughs). I wouldn’t do it if I was told to. This year, you’ll get into your 8th year since debut. How does it feel to live as a girl group? You must have lots of worries and thoughts, right? Being in a group, by itself, is like always being in an invisible contest. Watching a program like <Produce 101>, the members have a fierce rivalry between themselves. But that’s all a friendly kind of rivalry. Because they work more diligently with each other. It sounds vague to express it as ‘rivalry’, but regardless, a development starts taking place in there. However, to be in such environment causes a fundamental stress. Nevertheless, since I fortunately have an optimistic personality, I’m the kind to cast aside hardships positively. We think that’s why you get to develop your own identity. Ah right, we heard that T-ARA’s popularity is huge in China and other Asian countries. We always say this amongst ourselves, but we think we really have great luck. We’re not just saying this to sound humble. Our Japan activities and China activities were both just in time with the K-pop craze over there. You have a fan-meeting in Vietnam tomorrow, right? You do lots of overseas activities, so now you don’t have any places that you haven’t gone to already. There’s really no country that we haven’t gone to already, but since we always only stay in the hotel, the street scenery we see on our way from the airport to the hotel is all we get to see. It’s really a pity. I’m planning to go on a trip by myself when I have time. I love taking pictures and collect lots of cameras, to the point where I have a camera refrigerator at home. Now I want to try going around taking pictures with my camera. When we say Hyomin, the word ‘Nice body’ comes to mind. Do you have a secret to maintaining your toned body? I’m the type to gain weight when I don’t pay attention to my body. Once I used to relieve my stress by eating and ended up gaining 8kg. To think of it now, there’s really no diet that I haven’t tried already. I tried exercise, diet therapy, and detox but now they’re definitely less effective than before. That’s why I try to do exercise as a fun sport now, and I’m improving my daily habits. Rather than doing it obsessively, it’s important to have a balance. If I feel that I ate a lot today, then I try to eat less tomorrow. I take care of my body by making the amount of food intake proportional with my movement. I think that’s a good method for your body. Do you have any artist as your role model? I personally hope you continue to show us your experimental performances even after you hit 60s, just like Madonna. That person is a living cultural treasure (laughs). I actually have lots of foreign artists that I like, but I think in our country, there’s not much fields which I can do. This might be an excuse but there are many things that I ended up giving up on after thinking “Aye, how can I do that in our country.” We hope you can slowly break down (that prejudice). I put in a lot of efforts this time to break away in my own way. I hope guys can enjoy it. If you weren’t a singer, how do you see yourself doing? I’m very energetic and I like trying out different things, so I’d probably be doing another job that has to do with art. I lately have lots of interests in videos and visual directing so I’d love to try producing. Directing and taking responsibility from start to end while preparing for this album was more fun that I thought. It suits you well. What about your future plans? For the meantime, I have to focus on my solo activities and T-ARA’s overseas activities. We definitely enjoy working more than resting. We know well that this time is very important to us so we don’t even have time to complain saying it’s tiring. You must be enjoying your every day. That’s right.
