“To unite is to die, to split is to survive”.. Will Jiyeon kickstart T-ara’s 2nd beginning?
As the saying goes “to unite is to survive, to split is to die,” but the saying does not apply to T-ara. In fact, it should be the exact opposite: to unite is to die. After the July 2012 incident with Hwayoung, although two years have already passed, the public still view T-ara coldly and at a distance.
Have T-ara had their peak? They were the stars of the retro concept comebacks. Roly-Poly was the most popular song of 2011. However, after Hwayoung left the group, T-ara became a word synonymous with “anti.” T-ara’s retro style was no longer accepted by the public. Although they returned afterwards with Number Nine and Do You Know Me?, all they received was only the public ignoring them.
Will T-ara just fall like that? At this time, there is skepticism as their unexpected “counter-attack” begins. At the center of this is the group’s maknae, Jiyeon. She is not standing on stage as her original identity of T-ara Jiyeon but as “solo artist Jiyeon”. This is the start and notice to the beginning of the second start for T-ara.
Will T-ara’s “season two” succeed? At the very least, Jiyeon is experiencing a better reaction that thought.
“To unite is to die, to split is to survive”
Looking through “tainted glasses” is very scary. Misunderstanding and their explanations and apologies are all blocked. One will only see the color that they want to see when looking through “tainted glasses” and believe that the colo0r that they see is then the truth. For T-ara, that is what the tainted glasses did. No matter what the misunderstanding was, the public does not want to hear or accept T-ara’s apologies or explanations.
Therefore, for T-ara to unite (stay together) is to die. The public disregards their music and closes their eyes to their popular dance choreography. They don’t even give them a chance to showcase their charms. Under such circumstances, T-ara’s agency Core Contents Media chose to disperse them. That is, to have the members go solo. And the first protagonist is Jiyeon.
A source from Core Contents Media said that “T-ara still wants to show a lot of their talents.” Unfortunately, people already have a prejudice against T-ara. They continued by saying, “Jiyeon has a wide variety of images that has not yet been seen in T-ara. She wants to use her charms as a singer to show everyone.”
The result is a completely different image of Jiyeon when she is standing on the stage. She abandoned her image in T-ara. Instead, what she showed off is a perfect showcase of her personal charm. Through her solo song “1MIN 1SEC”, she challenged the concept of “innocent sexy.” The song is a sad song and the choreography is tough.
The head of choreography responsible for the dance said that “Jiyeon really was biting the bullet in enduring throughout her practice. She had two months of continuous preparation for the solo stage debut.” They also said, “The “singer Jiyeon” has a lot of things that she wants to show still. She purely wants to show her charisma as a singer; to attempt the things she has not done in T-ara.”
Viewing without prejudice.. will it work?
Now that T-ara is scattered, the results are appearing gradually. Although only partially, the “tainted glasses” that are always used to view T-ara are starting to come off. The first result was seen when Jiyeon’s “1MIN 1SEC ” occupied Cyworld music charts in the first position on the 20th. It was also listed in the Top 10 on other music charts.
The music video has also been popular. The “1MIN 1SEC music video” keyword has been repeatedly entered into the portal real-time search charts. Teasers, spoiler videos and the music video have all received a large amount of views. Even the dance choreography’s name of “pelvic dance” and “bat-dance” became top searched keywords.
The reaction from the public also has seen a shift from being “accusations ” to becoming “critical.” It is no longer a case of just “blindly hating” on T-ara. Comments such as “because it was like this, I don’t like it,” “this is not bad” have begun showing. This is different from the reactions from when T-ara had made comebacks. In fact, this was a never before seen reaction for them.
What would the public’s reaction be if T-ara sang “1MIN 1SEC”? The public would shut their ears and eyes and blindly hate. In contrast, they have opened their eyes and ears for Jiyeon’s “1MIN 1SEC”. Of course, there is always going to be a mixture of good and bad reactions. There were both the “sexy is the most desperate option” sarcasm and also the praises like “she actually has such talents like that?”
There is hope for Jiyeon. In an interview she made before making her solo debut, she said that “she understands” that people have negative feelings towards T-ara. But Jiyeon pleaded, “nevertheless, I hope you can be forgiving and view us without prejudice, even if it’s only for once.” Her plea is not for people to forget the past situations.. It is just her hope that as a singer, she can be judged by her performance this time.
T-ara’s 2nd beginning: not a crisis but a chance
At the time of her interview, Jiyeon was already had a lot of determination for this second beginning. She said, “My solo activity is not meant to increase my personal popularity. Although it is a solo song for me, I still want to stand on stage together with T-ara unnies again.”
Jiyeon’s solo challenge is also key in T-ara’s second season. It shows the individual member’s hidden charisma and looks to obtain a similar effect that T-ara’s group activities would achieve. Jiyeon has successfully taken the first step, and soon after, the other members will follow in her foot-steps.
Firstly, Hyomin will will take the baton for solo song promotions. She is set to debut next month. Hyomin has the best fashion sense in the group and she will use what suits her best for a showdown to determine the winner. The song has already been completed with Brave Brothers. She is currently “arming” her image with her modern and trendy fashionista outfits.
Other members will also begin solo activities in their respective fields. Former child star Eunjung will simultaneously take parts in movies and TV activities. In fact, Eunjung has recently received a movie proposal for “The Boss, The Beginning” to star as the female lead, but it is still being considered. Soyeon, Qri, and Boram also have the possibility of starting individual activities.
T-ara’s second season has begun. The strategy now is “to unite is to die, to split is to survive.” This is the inevitable consequence of the public choosing to ignore T-ara. But thinking from another way, this is also a chance for them. This is the last chance for each member to display their individual charisma.

This actually made me cry a bit.. People are too hateful nowadays, past is past, present is now… I hope they will see Jiyeon and Hyomin differently from how they were in T-ara. Judge them by their performances not by the past issues. Thank you!

I’m laughing so far. I know Number Nine was very well received in Korea. That article is pure falsehood.

Sometimes I wonder why people doesn’t know how to understand things that they supposed to understand?
Telling them negative comments will never take them DOWN nor BREAK them.
Those people who doesn’t want to forgive them are those people who doesn’t know the true meaning of FORGIVING! Come on people wake up, we are just HUMANS, we are not perfect but what are you doing? you’re criticizing T-ara because of that stupid bullying scandal that has no sufficient evidence?
Well there’s one thing that T-ara can do about the Anti’s…what is it? those ANTI fans makes them strong…that’s why they can never give up because of the ANTI’s…if you just open your eyes…see what they’ve got, to hear what they feel…
have you ever think that T-ara are like us? humans? with feelings? what will you do if you’re friend accused you things that you didn’t do? how do you feel?
FOR THE T-ARA…STAY STRONG, KEEP YOUR FAITH IN GOD COZ THAT’S THE BEST WEAPON YOU HAVE FOR THOSE BAD ELEMENT WHO WILL THINK TO BRING YOU DOWN.

Not sure why I am typing this but here goes. I am not entirely disagreeing but I am not entirely agreeing either.
-TLDR
~ Jiyeon’s image is better than T-ara. ~
Let’s analyze this closely shall we? First off, in Korea. Jiyeon is not doing A LOT better. She is doing better, but the difference is definitely not by a mile. First and foremost, let’s look at the obvious. As stated by the poster, comments have move from “blindly hating” to “critical”. First and foremost, this does not reflect on a huge portion of the population in Korea. In Korea, the scene is a lot more dead for T-ara than you can imagine.
People are taking more notice of Jiyeon as opposed to Na Eotteoke is due to the fact that the amount of effort CCM has put in in order to promote Jiyeon, not because the public has decided to view Jiyeon from a more logical point of view. Let’s compare three different scenarios.
1. Na Eotteoke Comeback
2. Davichi’s usual Comebacks
3. Jiyeon
Na Eotteoke was poorly received. Even the comeback news was poorly delivered and no form of promotion was done UNTIL the comeback has ended (comeback only lasted for 2 weeks tops). Davichi, being the ace of CCM in Korea didn’t even receive such form of promotion. CCM, this time really pushed it hard, promoting her in cafes, fast food restaurants, etc. Jiyeon entered with a bang in contrast with T-ara post controversy.
It’s a lot more “not caring about T-ara” and a lot less “I hate T-ara”. Most of the K Pop fans in Korea mostly act “based on impulse” when it comes to Internet commenting, hence during the Sexy Love era while the issue is still hot, there were many backlashes and the opposite can be said as well for Na Eotteoke (What Should I Do) comeback. The amount of comments and concentration towards Na Eotteoke is poor and that’s sugar coated mind you. It seems as though people are caring more Jiyeon but that is an optimist way of looking at things. Given the amount of promotion, it’s hard to not “care”. Comments on Cyworld being “a little” sweeter does not equate to anything. If we are want to compare how much attention Jiyeon is getting anyway, compare her with Number 9. Number 9 isn’t even good in terms of advertising, even having delay in album release (similar to Jiyeon) as well as performing BEFORE the actual comeback (Gyeongju Dream Concert).
So, I am going to be blunt. The public (Korean) is definitely not hating, or hating less on Jiyeon but they aren’t accepting her either.
Most of the fans that are currently attending Jiyeon’s comeback are fans of other members. If we are to seriously break T-ara apart (with an official announcement to boot), I am not sure what I should be expecting.
But in support of the writer, “Jiyeon” is a fresh start, definitely. Most fans are moving away from T-ara into other competitors like A Pink, Crayon Pop, etc mostly due to the fact that T-ara is being promoted poorly along with some sensitive factors that are better not off mentioning. The song producer definitely did not construct Na Eotteoke well and CCM, unlike most companies does not make events whereby the idols can show more of their trueself or give more fan services in order for more fans to stay (Crayon Pop & A Pink have been very active in terms of this). Hence, perhaps, just perhaps, CCM may be a lot more serious, adopting a different marketing strategy in promoting Jiyeon.
If any of my comments above don’t meet anyone’s eyes or may be proven false, feel free to shoot me down. Cheers and out.

I feel you hit the nail on the head with a lot of things, although on some points I disagree. The public definitely didn’t concern themselves with T-ara’s comeback for “What Do I Do?” but “Number 9” was actually pretty well-received in South Korea…obviously not up to the standards set for them in the past but at this point NO ONE is doing the kind of numbers that T-ara did in their prime…no one. Digital sales have kind of sunk across the board.
Ultimately I do feel that a “reset” of sorts is in order for them, and that is kind of what is happening at the moment. T-ara are basically having to start over from scratch and work their way back up, and promoting the members individually is a good way to get them back out into the public eye. While Jiyeon’s performance has only been so-so in terms of digital sales (we still have yet to see if QUEEN’S will come through on the physical sales front like they usually do) it is a step in the right direction…peaking in the top twenty of GAON, while not amazing, is a start, and it goes to show that CCM just can’t be lazy and expect the girls to sell themselves anymore. They aren’t attached to a lot of other projects/CFs currently so they have to put in some leg work if they want T-ara to have a fighting chance.
I do feel like a different strategy is needed in terms of how to promote them than how they did in the past; I personally believe “What Do I Do?” was a bona-fide hit that got glossed over because maybe CCM was a little TOO confident in its ability to perform well. “Number 9” had the advantage of being T-ara’s long-awaited comeback, so people were waiting with baited breath to see how it would do, but the excitement was pretty much gone by the time they did the re-release. Again, it all goes to properly promoting them…no media play, just sell the song and let the girls’ admittedly strong performances accentuate it. Obviously CFs and other promotional activities are opening up for them.
At the end of the day I think T-ara’s biggest problem has been the fact that they were largely reliant on the general public to buy their songs prior to their scandal, and they got their attention by being all over the place. Since Hwayoung-gate broke out they’ve largely been absent from Korea, choosing to promote in other portions of Asia. In order for them to start achieving success anywhere near reaching that level, they have to make themselves visible again. With their album sales in Japan diminishing it’s wise to re-establish their roots in Korea and by promoting separately for a while, they will soften the public’s view of them while hopefully reducing the vitriol that all six of them seem to invite when they are together, hopefully making for a much more positive reception when they finally do reunite for a legitimate comeback.

Allow me to address your points one by one though let me say one thing, I have no idea which point of mine you are disagreeing on.
I stated the promotion of Number 9 was relatively poor but I never said Number 9 was poorly received. Perhaps I didn’t phrase my words correctly but when I say compare Jiyeon to Number 9 in terms of attention, Number 9, with poor marketing and promotion was well received, a lot better in fact in comparison to Jiyeon’s.
In regards to your different strategy, yes I do agree a different strategy is important HOWEVER I do believe that a different approach has to be taken instead of the solo. A “reset” can be done in many ways but definitely not via Jiyeon solo, IF AND ONLY IF the well being of T-ara is the main concern at hand. Why do I say this? Let’s look at most groups’ standing with one member going solo successfully. For example, Hyuna from 4 Minute. I think further explanation is redundant but probably necessary. The group is now centered around Hyuna and it has come to a point that Hyuna is even more popular than the group itself. Are people really looking forward to 4 Minute on stage? Not really, probably only Hyuna on stage. If it’s for profitability, sure Jiyeon solo is definitely a good start. Cheaper in terms of everything (yes everything) only spells a higher ROI.
Secondly, the main topic at hand is their survivability in Korea and there is one point you stated that I BELIEVE needs to be reconsidered. Number 9 having the advantage of T-ara’s long awaited comeback.
As nicely as it sounds, that’s actually not the case or at least, not to the point which we can call a “significant” advantage. The public (IN KOREA) has already perceived that T-ara are just poison. Plagues. Whatever you name it. The thing about Koreans (IN GENERAL) are that, the media plays a huge role in their lifes and beliefs and once something is set, it’s hard, if not impossible to change their mindset on something. During music shows like Inki, Music Bank, etc, fans from MANY other fandoms can be heard saying “What? T-ara again?”, “They are back? I didn’t know”, “Them again? Boring”. CCM is not addressing this issue, or if they are, not enough and instead resorting to continuation of promotion only.
I do have to stress that you made a very good point that they have to revert back to recovery of their roots in Korea instead of only focusing in Japan and thanks for your response. It’s nice to hear back from someone.

I ultimately say, a PR Stunt is in order to not only “Jump Start” T-ara’s 2nd Coming but to give the other members a Fighting Chance with their own “Solo” outings.
Hwayoung, T-ara needs you to do a very big favor. Put all the bad blood aside and keep all the lingering negativity towards each other away from your heart and have lunch, brunch, or Dinner together and have it be public. Haters & critics will immediately criticize it as nothing more than “PR” (Public Relations) and to some extent it will be true BUT it will also help the larger audience/population see that you have put your differences aside and extended a “Olive Branch” (make peace) with each other.
Hwayoung, you yourself said for all the bad times in T-ara, there were also some very sweet moments as well. You yourself rose to Prominence/fame by being in the group and you know the other girls work very hard to achieve such fame. You know that they sacrifice a lot for you yourself were there for a whole year and a half.
I know it probably won’t be easy for either of you but be there for each other. Show your support visually. Hopefully all this disdain and indifference towards T-ara will begin to subside.
Brian
That actually wouldn’t be a bad idea, for T-ara OR for Hwayoung. Hwayoung isn’t seen in the most positive light herself recently due to what some view as her continuing to ride on T-ara’s coattails (she constantly mentions them in interviews and some of her replies haven’t been the most flattering). Plus her acting career hasn’t really gone anywhere so it might be what is needed for people to stop talking smack and throwing shade at all parties involved, although I doubt it will stop it outright.
Angel
Critics & Anti’s will immediately scream “Bloody Murder” and point it out as a “stunt” but T-ara & Hwayoung are not doing so well on their own. They need to grow up and realize that this “situation” is going to destroy both of them-period. Hwayoung does not need to return to T-ara or rejoin them but simply be seen together. They need to let bygones be bygones and sit down and have lunch in a public place. They will need to behave themselves not to linger on what each sees as flaws of one another, but concentrate on all the good times they had together (stay away from all the negative stuff because then they will end up bickering in public, pointing fingers at one another and that will really drive that final nail into their collective coffin). They’ll need to stick to when they laughed together, when they cried together, their 1st win together, when they both hated their boss for pushing too hard. Concentrate on all the positive things that made them into “sisters”.
