[14.11.05] Hyomin recalls school life, becoming an idol and her dreams to be actress in an interview with her own Sungkyunkwan University

    All-Rounded Entertainer, Her.

Korea’s representative girl group, T-ARA, who had left so many hit songs like “I Go Crazy Because Of You”, Bo Peep Bo Peep”, and “Roly Poly”. Amongst those girls who have it all from looks to talents, there is a member who studies in SKK University, that is Hyomin!

She, who is said to have had unique talents in art since she was young! Under the influence of having both of her parents majored in art, she has grown so interested in art, she says she has dreamt of enrolling in an art high school.

However, she was torn having had realised she lacks the art skills to enrol in an art high school. Therefore, she has found her new path that is ‘acting’! After she knew that the art high school she was applied in has a theatre department, she persuaded her parents and registered in an acting academy. She said that although her family were greatly worried about her new challenge at first, they came to acknowledge her passion shortly after.

"I was extremely nervous when I first went to the acting academy. I think I was feeling both thrilled and terrified at this new experiment. But I remember how I started this path after I reaffirmed my own resolution, by which I hardly convinced my parents and started going to this school.”

However, due to the keen competition, she failed to enrol in the school she wanted, and therefore enrolled in a regular high school, but she still was never let down. As she was going to the acting academy and studying acting, her personality changed to an enthusiastic and extroverted personality rather than an introverted one, and thanks to that she was able to open up and get to know more people in the field she was interested in. Anyhow, she started a new life goal of becoming a ‘musical actress’.

For that life goal, she had put in many efforts in singing, dancing, and acting, she lived fiercely not to repeat the same failure again. Thanks to that, she received various offers from many different agencies. Of course, it wasn’t that her efforts were recognised by everyone. She has underwent great frustration and scepticism when she failed the university aptitude test which she rejected all of these different offers in order to prepare for. However, she couldn’t just give up on her dreams and passions, she tried auditioning again and was finally accepted after her 3rd time. She enrolled in the university she wanted in last minute and achieved her goal. T-ARA Hyomin whose sense of accomplishment is said to have reached the skies back then. Based on this, she said she worked even harder in order to reach higher.

And this is how she started preparing for her new life as a celebrity and ended up being part of a popular group; however, it wasn’t so easy from the start. She didn’t adapt so easily to the trainee life in which she used to practice from early morning to midnight everyday without a break. There were many times where she would get tired due to all of this hard work and secretly run away, and what’s more is that she would unite with other trainees and rebel because the training program during the early trainee stages wasn’t satisfactory.

Above all, she confessed that it was tough as the gap between her ‘musical actress’ dream that she had since young and being in an idol girl group is vast. However, she didn’t give up and did her best until the end as she kept reminding herself that “Chances will come to me who’s trying.” Therefore, she ended up debuting in the entertainment industry after her trainee life that lasted for 4 years ended. Up until then, her source of strength was her family and her trainee colleagues whom she lived with and shared her joy with.

"So many entertainers recall their trainee period as an extremely tough period, right? Although It was tiring physically too, it was an extremely emotionally tiring period. I, too, held onto my dream goals, but if it wasn’t for my family and all the good friends around me it would’ve been way tougher for me. Especially the friends who shared the same dream and worked hard with me, they were a great help in overcoming such difficult time. We fail together, comfort each other…. It’s important to have the resolution to overcome tough times, but I think the feeling of reliance is also important. I am sincerely thankful to my family and friends who have been a great support for me."

After debuting in the entertainment industry like this, T-ara couldn’t stand out greatly during their rookie days; however, they attracted the public’s attention and succeeded after repeatedly showing original attempts and fresh concepts. (Hyomin) confessed while smiling that they were of an old age amongst girl groups during their debut time. However, the members said that despite that, they have put in great efforts such of enthusiastically attempting new things, personally researching them, and whatnot. In Bo Peep Bo Peep’s case, they said they were embarrassed when they first heard about it, but they enthusiastically proceeded with it with the mindset to enjoy it, and thanks to that they gained the honour of winning their first no.1 since debut. Also, they said that they suffered in order to create each’s own colour, such that during T-ara’s best hit track, Roly Poly, Hyomin personally designed her stage outfit.

Moreover, Hyomin ran once again towards her dream of being an actress. Her passion didn’t solely stop at music industry, she gained recognition for her acting skills which she worked for for a long time and started starring in dramas and movies. Drama , , etc. She, who showed her increased popularity through popular dramas, has starred in a Japanese movie as the lead this year.

Regarding having achieved the goal she had since young, she said she was happy and that this is just the start. It might be because of a long-time eagerness, but she said that when she thinks of the dramas and movies she starred in she gets mixed feelings. She said that although she has felt burdened in filming sites, she has come to discover the good sides of an actress’s job through this. She, who felt more passionate (about acting) than burdensome, said she wants to try acting in a short or an independent movie one time, and that she wants to develop more as an actress.

T-ara Hyomin who wants to live an ardent life where she gets to always challenge herself with new things. She, who is talented in many different fields and passionately works hard, is still a girl with many dreams. T-ARA is gaining hot popularity not only locally, but also overseas. At last, we have asked her about her opinion regarding T-ara’s secret to having gained all of this popularity and their goals.

"I think I was lucky. Just in time we debuted, the girl group craze started, and we were able to ride on the hallyu wave and meet international fans. We learned so many things while promoting, and are very thankful to our fans. In the future too, we want to promote more diligently under T-ARA’s name, be of help to our hoobaes, never forget fans’ love, and repay it through better songs and performances. That is our goal."

    SKK University And T-ARA’s Hyomin.

Hyomin, who enrolled in SKK University’s Art and Theatre Department before debut is very proud regarding her alma mater. She said that SKK University is a great asset to her as it is her future pride, and at the same time is the first accomplishment she achieved herself.

"The fact that this is the result I received after genuinely working for it by myself makes me feel a great sense of accomplishment and makes me proud. It made my parents very happy, and gave me huge faith (in myself). Just like other students, there are many times where just the fact that I attend SKK University is a source of strength to me."

Although her university student life and trainee life were going side-by-side, she said she could never give up on either of them. Even in the midst of her tight schedules everyday, her attachment to her university was so strong that she would ask to be excused at her agency just to attend university regularly. Thanks to that, she was able to enjoy every bit of her university life while at the same time digesting her schedule and tight routine as a trainee. ‘From orientations to MTs to even meetings’, Hyomin who was happy to have enjoyed it all in her university life. When she was asked what university life memory remains to her the most she smiled and answered that ‘It’s hard to just pick one’. After she finished choosing, she finally said it was the ‘festival performance’.

"The memory of when we performed the musical ‘Greece’ during the University’s festival is so vivid. It was my first experience of standing on stage and communicating with the audience. It was a gala-show themed performance that was cut down to 25 minutes, but it was a very very special experience. Expressing myself on stage, and then expressing myself again with the audience, feeling such moments made me feel once again how cool my dream of being an actress that I had since young is. We recorded that performance in video, I gain strength when I sometimes look back to it."

Of course, her university life wasn’t just something she spent joyfully. Her greed in learning was no less than others’, and she never neglected her studying. What class would she recommend? Without hesitation, she picked the ‘Speech And Debate’ class. She said that at first she felt a huge burden speaking in front of many people, but through this class she overcame her fears a lot and was able to gain self-confidence.

She also picked another class that remained in her memory that is the Video Scenario Filming class. She said it was a short class she took as a major course, but producing movies along with friends who all have the passion and ambition was extremely fun. She said that they had so many different experiences such as filming all night long, coordinating various opinions during the producing and editing stage, and so on, which all was of a great help for her at filming locations in real life. She also said that above all, it was a class in which she was able to learn what to do when she’s having a hard time and what to do when others are having a hard time, which made her feel great, and hence it’s a class that remains in her memory for a long time.

[T/N: this interview took place on January]

Recently she has wrapped up her overseas activities which lasted for a long time, and is now preparing to meet again with her local fans through a solo album. Although she is recently on a hiatus from her continuously busy schedule, she wants to return to university for a while and do university activities. She said if she ever gets to return to school, she wants to try getting a scholarship. “wouldn’t it be possible if I focus only on school without overlapping with my celebrity life…” She said while showing a bashful smile. At last, we asked her about what would she like to say to SKK University’s alumni and enrolled students.

"There are so many times where I’d miss university life even amidst my busy schedule. To me, all of the moments I spent attending school have remained to me as precious memories. They also remain as a source of strength for me. I think of it as a school that has given me so many good things. I hope that you all would enjoy your university life, gain good ties and good experiences before you leave. I am always thankful."

    Hoobae asks, Sunbae answers.

(Hyomin: Art and Theatre Department, Class 6081)

Q.Who’s the person you respect the most?

    A. I think it’s the best school to gain what I want. Also, I trusted this school as it was one that filled me with the self-confidence I needed. I remember how extremely happy I was when my parents told me I enrolled in this university. I actually think you’d know more about this than I do. (Laughs)

[T/N: I think there was a mistake in here as the answer doesn’t match the question.]

Q.What was the happiest moment for you after you debuted?

    A. Although the moment where we had our first no.1 win with Bo Peep Bo Peep remains in my memory, I still think it was more remarkable when we had our first fan-club inauguration ceremony. 3 years after our debut, we held our fan-club inauguration ceremony at Kyunghee University, the moment where we got to personally meet with the fans who trusted us and supported us was the happiest moment.

Q.Is there anything you’d want to do if you return to school?

    A. There’s so many that it’s hard for me to say everything. (Laughs) This is greedy, but, just like when I used to attend university before, I want to try doing everything in a common university life. Going to classes with my friends, eating at the cafeteria, going to MT’s. Looking back, the trivial enjoyments I gained from everyday life where all great enjoyments. Of course, meeting with cool people would be fun too, but that’s got to be difficult, right? (Laughs).

Q.Are you always treasuring your ‘Musical Actress’ dream?

    A. I actually still have my old days’ dreams, but I think I should be careful talking about it. Because the ‘musical’ genre is a performance field that needs a tremendous depth to it. It’s a job where you have to work with many people for 3 months, I don’t think it’s something I can do just with my greed alone. Of course, It hasn’t changed that if I get a really good opportunity and get the circumstances that enable me to immerse myself into it, then I’d definitely want to try and challenge myself with it.

It's easy to miss it because she's often too underweight. Honestly I was very surprised at first when I saw people say that she was the sexy one in the group since she just seemed the silly one. And yeah, the girl certainly has the real deal . I can only imagine how she'd look if she put on a few pounds.

It amazes me how quickly my opinion changes on this  . But overall, I'd say Hyomin's are the most impressive when she has a more or less healthy weight. She's overall very well proportioned and has the most impressive curves imo(took me some time to actually notice that since she's often too underweight). Jiyeon and Qri aren't far themselves.

Vice_devil reacted to Dinorawwrs in [SPAZZ] T-ara - SugarFree Analysis
Once again, T-ara is collaborating with the almighty Shinsadong Tiger to produce another hit songs to save Kpop \0/  So as usual, using their prime weapon, which is their music, T-ara will be releasing a song with “Big Room / EDM” genre in which when it is first heard, it isn’t a really good idea because in a typical clubbing music, almost 80% of the song will be pure sound and adding vocal or singing while the music drops isn’t really that appealing.

Other than that, this time, CCM is not planning to attract potential older fans (eg, Roly Poly,Lovey Dovey, Do you Know Me) and instead, they are probably attracting EDM musicians and youth of similar interests. I can assume that this song serves to make a transition of mixing EDM and Kpop world together and SugarFree will be one of the examples.

Anticipate SugarFree remixes everywhere from now on~

    Music analysis (EDM edit)

SugarFree PROVES that it is possible to make a song out of a club song.

In the first part of the music, it’s the usual T-ara beat ( Or farting sound or so they call it ), and right after that, the Big Room beats comes in almost immediately which is quite interesting because in most of the kpop songs and even typical EDMs, they usually have some transition like for example snares and even a build-up but instead, it immediately transits to a Big Room sound. Though it seems awkward, but it really gives the “BOOM” or the hype factor to the music, every person who is listening to SugarFree for the first time will know what I’m talking about.

Right after the big room transition, there goes the build-up. The build-up can be heard in a typical EDM music and adding some raps makes us anticipating the drop badly.

As for the drop, I really like it!  It is like a mix of Sexy Love + Number 9, and has a Lovey Dovey feeling to it.
Right after the epic drop, here is what I find interesting. It really feels like a different song now, which turns off some people. Maybe this is the part where it tells a story ( In most Kpop music, CMIIW , changes their tempo and tone to portray feelings and meaning towards the story of the music, more on that in MV analysis).

Chorus part, one of the best parts in the song. I like the huge snare sound just before the chorus because it really gives the song more energy and it is really complementing the song. Other than that, it really gives the T-ara feeling to it although the music genre itself is conquering the whole song.

Vocal wise, Soyeon really sings differently now and I kind of like this style of her singing. Qri and Boram singing exchangably really gives the song more in depth flavor to it. Their voices do complement each other ^^ As for EunMinYeon, I would say that their rap is so **** epic!

    MV & Lyrics review ( + POV)

We can’t deny the fact that CCM ALWAYS released a seizure-inducing music videos. Also, other than CCM being the most annoying troller ever, they always come up with some messages or stories with a very subtle but often deep meaning to it if reviewed properly.

    Visual & Background

So our ability to watch every frame changing every 0.000001 nano second are tested in this MV. Many people including myself are very annoyed with the excessive and unnecessary flashes in the video >< But then again, it is supposed to portray a clubbing scene so I wouldn’t complain. And it is interesting that the dancing scenes are interchanged by dark and colorful background. ( Will explain further in the lyrics review). Also not to mention those stares that can slay the whole humanity in one look >< as well as squishy, refined and toned chocolate abs @.@

    Costume / Outfit

I don’t see why they complain the outfits I quite like it. I know different people have different taste but I don’t see why many people criticize the outfit that much -.- Freestyle costume and the tight race suit costumes are really hot I can even…

    Dance/Moves

I really like when Jiyeon is being aggressive and point directions at the start of the video. It gives the “ARE YOU PREPARED FOR THIS” feeling to it.

I also feel that the random dancing part during the music drop really is necessary as it gives us, the viewers a sense of belonging with the music. You know what I mean, when you first heard the drop, you dance your butt out XD and the random dancing serves as to connect the viewers with them~

The chorus dance part is the one I find very interesting. When we already hear the big drop at the start, and we dance “together” with them, you kind of wanting more of the music drop and anticipating the highlight of the dance.

But as soon as the chorus drops, the dance are such that it is really simple and slow/restricting. Whenever we hear the epic chorus,  we tend to want to dance the living soul out of us. But then the dance is quite ‘introverted’ and this is where I can sense what CCM is doing here.

If we were to follow the dance, you find it not enough and empty, but then your body wants to move about more to the music. It is this element of wanting more and more as we hear/watch the music video that makes it so addictive. It is a psychology effect ( Cant remember what that was >< )

Also with added anticipation and adrenaline inside the our body, waiting for another big drop, there comes Hyomin’s rap part. I find this part the best because you are already connected with the music from the start, you are craving for the music and this part is to serve as to concentrate the effect more by giving the “Pump it up” and “Wait, THERE’S MORE??” feeling to it and ends the song with the last chorus which is to satisfy the viewers/listeners craving for the music

All and all it is very addictive and you can’t help it but to want more!!!

    Point of view

Yes as we all see from the comments or even Korean websites, I do agree to a small extent that SugarFree has many similar tunes in some EDM music and also some parts form Sistar. But does that mean that they are plagiarizing other groups or people’s music.

SugarFree Big Room Tune: Similar to Dvbbs 'Tsunami' and DJ Felix 'Give Me Body'

    Hyomin/Jiyeon raping part : Sistar's Touch my body  ( @ 1:52 )

Album Cover: Similar to Justice's cross.

Rebuttal: As pointed out by Kekeru88,

“That is not plagiarism, there is a thing called homage: homage is a show or demonstration of respect or dedication to someone or something. The term is often used in the arts for where one author or artist shows respect to another by allusion or imitation. In music homage can take the form of a composition, a tribute album or of a sample.”

Also, the real album cover is not the one that has cross anyways so why bother?

*Lyrics review will be up soon! Meantime, please do support T-ara by any means ^^ Hwaiting Queen’s

After what Brave Bro did to Hyomin and few other artists recently, I would not favor his song for T-ara. Really I cannot imagine how much of a fresh and new song Brave Bro could produce.
Just listen to his songs from this past year or two, from Sistar and TeenTop to Hyuna and Speed and AOA and very recently Hyomin: they all sound like some recycled mashed up songs!
Brave Bro was the man only back then when he produced BigBang's hits.

As for ShiTiger, he's full of surprises, very flexible and versatile in sounds, arrangements, and style. He can be annoyingly catchy like in T-ara's Bo Peep Bo Peep and Roly Poly, but can be dramatic as well in Beast's Fiction. And looking back at his past works for T-ara, I prefer ShiTiger for T-ara's title track.

And it's a good call by CCM for not enlisting Duble Sidekick again, at least for now. They've been rising too fast, working too many projects, and now they sound watered down. I'm still holding a grudge for what they did to Jiyeon's solo track.

This was kind of weak. Their lypsincing was a little off so even leaving out the heavily autotuned vocals from the recording it's clear they don't sing at all, for the most part anyway. I think there were a few parts where it seemed like they used their voices to go with the recording but I'm not sure.
Their dancing was a bit sluggish, especially the roly poly part, it might be because they're tired and/or out of practice, but not having heels probably would have helped.

It's funny because I wanted to make a thread just like this before found it.
    Good:
    1. Ridiculously catchy songs, even their mistakes(Yayaya, BPBP) don't sound that bad when compared to some other groups.
    2. Good rappers in general, and good usage of them in many songs(not in all, sadly).
    3. They have a somewhat unique look. I'm not sure what it is but as far as looks go they tend to stand out to other groups, at least from my point of view.
    4. Fun on variety and shows(this honestly applies mostly to Soyeon).
    5. Interesting concepts, with a few exceptions.
    Bad:
    1. Bad performances. This is a problem that they've had since day 1 and it goes to all of them to a certain extent, but especially Jiyeon and Qri. Soyeon tends to be the best in my eyes. Eunjung, Hyomin and Hwayoung(in her later days) were/are one step behind. Boram and Ahreum were/are pretty ok. I still like their performances, but that;s mostly because of their 'charms' and because their songs are cool rather than any performing ability.
    2. Their autotuned voices in their korean songs sound too similar to each other and are too chipmunk like(except the rappers'). It's the reason why I like their japanese songs better in many cases, something that doesn't happen with any other groups.
    3. Bad line distribution, which is a problem most, if not all, idol groups have. Boram and Qri have suffered the most because of this, Hwayoung too in their earlier days. Sometimes Soyeon seems to get fewer lines than the main vocalist should get(though to be fair, the main vocalist gets the harder parts, not necessarily the most).
    4. Inefficient management(KKS/CCM). I'm sure there's no need to elaborate on this one, The 3 from above are likely because of this as well.
    5. They seem kind of fake to me. This mostly applies to the golden trio(Eunjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon) and, to a lesser extent, Soyeon. I have a hard time liking them for their 'personalities' because of this. They do seem nice, cute, and friendly with each other, but in the back of my head I always get the feeling that it's fake for the most part and that they're probably nasty off camera. In Soyeon's case I don't really care anymore because her humor makes me like her despite any other flaws she might have. I don't have a problem with any of the others, though sometimes I was uncomfortable with Hwayoung(as much as I like her), mostly because she didn't seem to fit in no matter how much she seemed to try.
    6. Some members get much more camera time than others, more than I'm personally comfortable with. Mostly goes to the golden trio, particulary Jiyeon.

and again if it is revealed hwayoung doesnt want to come back to t-ara (which i couldnt blame her after all this) then i will have no problem accepting it. cant say id still feel the same way about t-ara or comfortable supporting them meaning that money is going to the poopface KKS.
KKS damaged t-ara and is unwilling to admit fault and take the steps needed to fix it.
take a stand and save t-ara. dont sit back and let KKS win.
    HWAYOUNG FOREVER

i never understood this sort of thing. how is someone dumping water on themselves controversial. i dont see how it relates to anything.
yes i understand there was a tragedy in south korea. its a horrible event. my thoughts and prayers to everyone.
but even so. i remember when i lost family when the world trade centers collapsed on 9/11. and they did the same thing back then. they removed songs from air waves that may "remind" people of that event. they removed the twin towers from the spider man trailers at the time. (just throwing an example out there)
none of it bothered me. none of those images made me feel bad. because if you live through something like that, its always going to be with you. whether you see it on TV (anywhere) or hear about it. and you cant hide from those things. you cant live the rest of your life hiding from images or things related to that event.
i understand the mindset to be respectful, but really, you putting all that effort into protecting me from seeing and hearing things you thought i wouldnt want to see or hear, didnt help me at all. just because i didnt see the twin towers in a spider man movie didnt make me forget. just like seeing the twin towers in a picture i have in my house didnt make me break down in anxiety either.

thank you for the thought, but you know, just not worth the effort. you spent all that time working hard on your art. i say keep it in. dont ruin your work because of me. dont let me be the reason you cripple your work. if anything its offensive to me, to say im the reason you changed your art.

just another perspective to take into account.

and i dont understand why this article is so cryptic. just say who it is.

Personally I don't think Eunjung really set the bar in TTL. I mean it was good for k-pop rapping and it was enjoyable to hear, but I don't think it's something that Hwayoung and even Ahreum couldn't have done themselves if given the chance.
Maybe I have too much confidence in Hwayoung's superiority at rapping but eh, I'm pretty sure a lot of our preferences regarding this are based more on how much we like them and their voices more than actual skill anyway.

Hey! Hwayoung wrote some lyrics at some point. Kinda. Still something for someone having little actual training, I think? Regardless of that I still find T-ara rappers better than most other k-pop rappers, at least female ones, part of why I like them. But yeah comparing them to experienced rappers is kind of like comparing k-pop singers to actual singers/vocalists, not much of a comparison.
I'm curious though, you mentioned Zico, Miryo and that BAP guy(which I agree with, minus the BAP guy because I don't know him), but what do you think about Taewoon(Zico's bro) and those definetly not trying too hard dudes from BTS?
EDIT: Ok I'm not gonna lie, some of the stuff you linked is awesome, particulary the first three. Looks like I'll become a E.via fan!

I'm expecting some japanese versions of quite a few of their korean songs so I'm looking forward to this album. I usually avoid japanese versions of k-pop songs almost on principle because of how much cooler the korean language is, but when it comes to T-ara their japanese versions are often better imo. Probably because the way their voices are autotuned makes them sound less like chipmunks compared to their korean songs.

Maybe Boram can be a good rapper if she has a lot more confidence... A LOT... I do not think it can happen.. well anytime soon at least. I watched the Budokan concert when she replaced Hwayoung rapping part, but to be honest she did not seem convincing (well at least not as convincing as Hwayoung)
