  1. This article is too biased for me to take seriously. It makes T-ara seem like poor ignored victims of the korean public and this just isn't true. They're not ignored or disregarded, they're still fairly succesful and still have considerably more succes than a lot of other groups. Not as much as before, no, but it's not because the public is close minded and just simply unforgiving, it's because of their moronic management that screwed things up royally.

As far as I'm concerned the public has every right to doubt T-ara's image after the scandal. If you look at the girls' past knack for scandals and blunders, and at the agency's actions during the Hwayoung scandal skeptically it's impossible to not at least suspect there's something unpleasant about them. Heck, even a lot of their then die hard fans thought so, at least in the beginning.

Anyway I like the sound of this reverse 'Divide and conquer' thing that this writer thinks is going on, but I figured that while CCM might want to have the public stop associating the members with the name 'T-ara' so they can disassociate from their past blunders more, they probably want to do this more so people get used to them as soloists and to promote them easier when T-ara disbands(or to milk them of whatever the can until their contracts expire), not because they want to start a second season of T-ara. I suppose we'll have to see.

This article had a few funny things though. Like:

'The public disregards their music and closes their eyes to their popular dance choreography.' If it's so popular how is it disregarded? :P

'Looking through “tainted glasses” is very scary' Unless you have rose tainted glasses like the writer, then it's a blast! Also I thought the public was closing their eyes, what relevance do the glasses have then ?

Kind of wonder what sort of articles we can expect when Hyomin starts her own debut.

  2. Didn't seem like she was moving her lips to the song that well, must be the way the camera kept changing.

Also how the heck is this an androgynous concept? She's not as 'feminine' as her other performances maybe but there's no ambiguity regarding her sex, she's clearly very much a woman even at first glance. Maybe if she had dressed in an actual suit.

  3. While I wasn't overly fond of that part of the choregraphy, I'm a bit surprised. Sure it was a bit sexy for conservative tastes, and I'm a bit conservative myself, but I'm pretty sure I've seen even sexier before without any changes being ordered. Ah well.

@Scatter: South Korea is best Korea!

  4. Given that it doesn't seem to be a particularly difficult choregraphy I would have liked if they had let her actually sing, over a backup track of course, instead of just moving her lips to the lyrics. Not that she's the only one doing this mind you, but given how heavily they autotuned her voice it's hard to pretend that she's singing it live; hearing her voice along with the track would have made things more believeable.

I suppose she probably doesn't have the vocals to make it work very well(common problem with songs where the voices are heavily autotuned) but I want an actual performance, damnit!

  5. You do all realise that all the admirable things she says are very likely to be something that CCM told her to say, right? Still can't get how people automatically buy these statements as if they come from the idols themselves.

Anywho, the song is disappointing to me. Reminds me too much of one of Pink's songs and I feel they could have autotuned her voice better.

The video is decent, she's pretty hot, though nothing that spectacular that blows my mind.

Overall for all the hype it's pretty disappointing imo.

  6. It's funny because I wanted to make a thread just like this before found it.

    Good:

    1. Ridiculously catchy songs, even their mistakes(Yayaya, BPBP) don't sound that bad when compared to some other groups.

    2. Good rappers in general, and good usage of them in many songs(not in all, sadly).

    3. They have a somewhat unique look. I'm not sure what it is but as far as looks go they tend to stand out to other groups, at least from my point of view.

    4. Fun on variety and shows(this honestly applies mostly to Soyeon).

    5. Interesting concepts, with a few exceptions.

    Bad:

    1. Bad performances. This is a problem that they've had since day 1 and it goes to all of them to a certain extent, but especially Jiyeon and Qri. Soyeon tends to be the best in my eyes. Eunjung, Hyomin and Hwayoung(in her later days) were/are one step behind. Boram and Ahreum were/are pretty ok. I still like their performances, but that;s mostly because of their 'charms' and because their songs are cool rather than any performing ability.

    2. Their autotuned voices in their korean songs sound too similar to each other and are too chipmunk like(except the rappers'). It's the reason why I like their japanese songs better in many cases, something that doesn't happen with any other groups.

    3. Bad line distribution, which is a problem most, if not all, idol groups have. Boram and Qri have suffered the most because of this, Hwayoung too in their earlier days. Sometimes Soyeon seems to get fewer lines than the main vocalist should get(though to be fair, the main vocalist gets the harder parts, not necessarily the most).

    4. Inefficient management(KKS/CCM). I'm sure there's no need to elaborate on this one, The 3 from above are likely because of this as well.

    5. They seem kind of fake to me. This mostly applies to the golden trio(Eunjung, Hyomin and Jiyeon) and, to a lesser extent, Soyeon. I have a hard time liking them for their 'personalities' because of this. They do seem nice, cute, and friendly with each other, but in the back of my head I always get the feeling that it's fake for the most part and that they're probably nasty off camera. In Soyeon's case I don't really care anymore because her humor makes me like her despite any other flaws she might have. I don't have a problem with any of the others, though sometimes I was uncomfortable with Hwayoung(as much as I like her), mostly because she didn't seem to fit in no matter how much she seemed to try.

    6. Some members get much more camera time than others, more than I'm personally comfortable with. Mostly goes to the golden trio, particulary Jiyeon.

  7. Looking good, love the one where she wears black. I do wonder if all this hype is a good thing though. They make her debut seem like a fantastic phenomenon and an unrecognizable transformation for Jiyeon, but that just makes expectations rise all the more and it's not really easy to rise up to such expectations.

I know that some hype is always necessary but I just wonder if they're overdoing it. Maybe it's just me.

  8. Personally I don't think Eunjung really set the bar in TTL. I mean it was good for k-pop rapping and it was enjoyable to hear, but I don't think it's something that Hwayoung and even Ahreum couldn't have done themselves if given the chance.

Maybe I have too much confidence in Hwayoung's superiority at rapping but eh, I'm pretty sure a lot of our preferences regarding this are based more on how much we like them and their voices more than actual skill anyway.

Not to be of any offense, but calling them rappers is stretching it.

Generally speaking, K-pop rappers - particularly those in idol groups - aren't really considered actual rappers. The only ones who are exempt from it would be Zico from Block B, Bang Yongguk from BAP and Miryo from Brown Eyed Girls, and that's because they actually know how to rap, know how to write their own stuff and have had real experience prior to actually debuting.

Not even G-Dragon and TOP are considered so. In fact, you could even say that aside from the 3 mentioned above, all the 'rappers' of K-pop idol groups are more along the lines of fast-rhythmic talkers than rappers.

As far as female rappers go, you got Tasha/Yoon Mirae, Gilme, E.via, Choi Sam and the list goes on. If you think Eunjung, Areum, Hwayoung etc rap like machine guns, then the others rap like this :3

    Bigass weapon

    This is what is called and considered female K-rapping;

Hey! Hwayoung wrote some lyrics at some point. Kinda. Still something for someone having little actual training, I think? Regardless of that I still find T-ara rappers better than most other k-pop rappers, at least female ones, part of why I like them. But yeah comparing them to experienced rappers is kind of like comparing k-pop singers to actual singers/vocalists, not much of a comparison.

I'm curious though, you mentioned Zico, Miryo and that BAP guy(which I agree with, minus the BAP guy because I don't know him), but what do you think about Taewoon(Zico's bro) and those definetly not trying too hard dudes from BTS?

EDIT: Ok I'm not gonna lie, some of the stuff you linked is awesome, particulary the first three. Looks like I'll become a E.via fan!
